South Marion Citizen - Freedom Public Library column - September 11, 2009 issue

By Carol Jones

The Library Detective Agency wants YOU!

Freedom Public Library invites all tweens, grades 4 thru 6, on a Magical Mystery Tour of the new virtual library and “Break the Code” Wednesday, September 16 and November 4, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the computer lab.

According to library supervisor Heather Ogilvie, “We are seeking a select group of students to participate on a team of Research Detectives and unravel a library mystery.”

This is a fun opportunity for all tween-agers meeting the requirements of clear thinking, careful planning, dedication to truth, and open mindedness. Training will be provided and Secret Resources will be revealed.

Inside information for parents: Students will learn to navigate the vast electronic resources available at your library. Please be aware that ace detectives may become Homework Experts.

The number of workstations is limited which means registration is strongly recommended. Walk-in participants may join the team only as space permits. For further information, stop at the Reference Desk, or call Erin, David, or Heather, 428-2580.

Altrusa Read-In

ALTRUSA International of Ocala will hold its 21st Annual Read-In for Literacy on Wednesday, September 16. Every classroom in every elementary school in the county will have a volunteer reader on the morning of September 16, reading at the same time. If you would like to volunteer to read at Hammett-Bowen Elementary School or any other, contact Peggy Haworth at 237-8418.

Organic Vegetable Gardening

On Saturday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m., Marion County Master Gardeners present Organic Vegetable Gardening by president Josephine Leyte-Vidal. Ms. Vidal has extensive knowledge in gardening organically and has raised her own organic vegetables for many years. Her excellent presentation was given last month to a full house at the library’s Central branch and we are honored to have her at Freedom Public Library. Come with paper, pencil and questions, and be prepared to learn the ins and outs of growing vegetables in Marion County.

Reading equipment for the visually impaired

Equipment and technology to assist persons with disabilities has come to your library. Attend the Keys to Access - Windows to the World open house from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday, September 25, when the Freedom Scientific representative will be available to demonstrate the new Onyx magnifying camera and SARA (Scanning and Reading Appliance). These marvelous machines designed to facilitate reading for the visually impaired are now available to the public, free at Freedom Public Library.

Skill Builders: Adaptive Toy Materials will also be on display and sign language interpreters will be available.

This project is provided as a Public Service by the Marion County Board of County Commissioners. The assistive technology materials and equipment have been funded under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the State Library of Florida.

Stop, Drop, and Read

August and September mean back to school for most youngsters. At the library it means S.U.R.F.’s Up, or Super Ultimate Reading Fun. With this entertaining program’s theme, Stop, Drop, and Read, kids and parents alike enjoy a brief burst of spontaneous learning in ten terrific minutes. Join the fun on Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m. and help us prove once again that every moment in the library counts.

Friends of the library need your help

Year end is only a few short months away and new officer nominations will soon appear on The Friends of Freedom Public Library’s agenda. Our large membership faithfully pay their yearly dues and we’re grateful for every one of you. But we need active members who willingly contribute time and talent toward the ongoing support of our library. We need new ideas and forward thinkers, and we know such persons are reading this column this minute. We are eager to meet you. Come share your knowledge and abilities by serving on the board or its committees.

Learn more about us and our purpose by attending our meetings on the third Monday at 10 a.m. (September 21) in the library’s meeting room. Or call vice president Kermit Clark, 861-0353; former president Joan Francis, 840-0696; or this columnist Carol Jones, 873-8565. If you get an answering machine, please leave your name and phone number and your call will be returned.

Friends need book donations

We need volunteers to help load and unload books at Neighborhood Storage and at the library on Wednesday, September 23, the day before the sale. Give Kermit Clark a call at 861-0353.

Books, games, puzzles, CDs, videos, and … oh yes, books -- All donations in good condition are not only welcome, they are needed. If you missed the earlier list of contacts for pick-up, here it is again. We look forward to hearing from you.

Heather’s Hi-Lites

We are enjoying a quiet month of August at the library, organizing our collection, preparing programs for the school year, taking much needed vacations, and generally cleaning house after an extremely busy summer. Suggestions are welcome from our members. What would you like to find, hear, see, enjoy, or learn at your library?

Freedom has marvelous new Assistive Technology equipment available to the visually impaired for reading documents and books or filling out forms. The formal Open House Introduction will be held on September 25, but the Onxy and SARA are here and ready to go anytime. Stop in and ask at the Reference Desk. We’re happy to demonstrate our new capabilities and answer your questions.

Some of the entries in the Miami Dolphins Coloring Contest are on display. Judging begins September 1.

Computer Classes

Registrations are still open for the two-part beginner class: Computer Basics and Introduction to the Internet. These must be completed in two consecutive weeks. Classes will be held on Thursdays at 2 p.m. beginning September 17. Stop at the Reference Desk and sign up. Seating is limited.

Book Club Selection

The next book under discussion by the Freedom Book Club on Friday, September 18, at 1 p.m. will be Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie. During their meeting’s second half, they will discuss chapters 4, 5, and 6 of Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond. For information about the group, contact Lee Staiger at leestaiger@embarqmail.com
